The BarCampTour goes to New Orleans

As you may know, BatchBlue is one of the sponsors of the BarCampTour which is a ten-city tour of BarCamps for 2011. The latest and 5th stop on the tour was at BarCampNola 4 in New Orleans.
The conference was held at Launch Pad which is a beautiful co-working space located in a building that is also home to a number of tech companies. Organizers Matt Tritico and Nicky Mast did an amazing job. The conference was very well organized and I enjoyed participating in the the BarCampNola tradition of introducing yourself with three words. Every detail was well thought out including the cute t-shirts and the delicious lunch.
Attendees added their session proposals to the Big Board, and then we were off! There were so many interesting sessions it was hard to choose one for each time-slot. Some of the sessions I attended were:
- “10 ways to make your pictures not suck” with presenter Christopher Johnston a New Orleans photographer
- “Weedeating” by Peter Bodenheimer which addressed ways to handle difficult customers
- “Two Wheels and a Motor” tons of info about ways to motorize bikes and the presenter Matt Candler shared the process he used to build his own electric motorcycle
- “Brand Loyalty” with Jonathan Kay of Grasshopper
- “Customizing Your Text Editor” presented by Federico Holgado from MailChimp
- “3D Jewelry design with Grasshopper & Rhino” with Chesley Adler
Not to mention the casual lunch conversation with some folks from TurboSquid which became an unscheduled session about 3D printing and aeronautics.
Sunday’s “Hack Day” project was Noladex.org. A group of over 40 people came together to create this directory of New Orleans creatives in just one day! Several developers from the BarCampTour helped out with project. Go Team!
If you get a chance to attend a BarCamp conference, do it! It is a great opportunity to learn from other people on a vast variety of subjects. Keep an eye on the BarCampTour schedule and please come say “Hi” if we are at a city near you.
